William Klein Retrospective: 1956 es el año en que se publicó en París «New York» de William Klein. El libro, demasiado negro, demasiado brutal, demasiado subjetivo, no encontró ningún editor en Estados Unidos. Nunca ha sido publicado en este país pero influyó de forma duradera en el medio artístico. Esta obra supuso el inicio de un género, el periódico fotográfico y, dos años más tarde, Robert Delpire publicó Los norteamericanos de Robert Frank.
Algunos han visto en este libro que retorna, sistematizándolo, el estilo brutal y el montaje entrecortado de la prensa sensacionalista, uno de los precursores del movimiento pop. Efectivamente, por primera vez, el grano, la violencia de los contrastes, el desencuadre, las deformaciones, las fotografías de prensa movidas, se convierten en los elementos de un planteamiento voluntario.
La pretendida objetividad documental de la fotografía desaparece ante la afirmación a ultranza de una subjetividad que suprime cualquier distinción entre el fotógrafo y el tema.
William Klein siempre ha tenido esta facilidad para «manipular» la fotografía, para arriesgarse a hacer que las cosas se muevan. Tanto si maqueta un libro, como si rueda una película o realiza un encargo para el mundo de la moda o la publicidad, siempre encontramos el mismo género inventivo. Klein es igualmente exigente cuando se trata de una obra como ésta, que recoge sesenta años de su carrera, del rodaje de un spot publicitario para las medias Dim, que se ha convertido en legendario, o de la preparación de una exposición.
La presentación que ha escogido William Klein en el Centro Pompidou sorprenderá a más de uno, de la misma manera que nos sorprendió cuando le descubrimos, pero no tenemos ninguna duda de que esta exposición marcará una etapa en la manera de comprender una de las obras más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX
