De los quince mil grabados que se cuenta hizo Posada para la principal imprenta de asuntos populares de Vanegas Arroyo, todos los que no fueron destruidos o robados durante la Revolución, y, hasta donde se sabe, se están publicando aquí.
Paul O´Higgins, que tuvo la tarea de escoger y arreglar estos grabados, encontró muchos de ellos entre montones de polvo, teniendo que montarlos de nuevo. Un buen número de ellos se usa todavía en las ‘calaveras’ o en los corridos e ilustrando canciones y oraciones religiosas.
Para conservar y reproducir la mayor parte de estas valiosas ilustraciones, hemos tenido que sacrificar nuestro deseo de publicarlas en su forma original. Cuando se imprimieron por primera vez, estaban en papel de colores, con mayores márgenes y orlados deliciosamente con antiguos diseños. Esta forma de reproducción fue respetada en el número especial de Mexican Folkways, dedicado a Posada. Más que un libro de arte, hemos formado una antología para artistas y para el público que sepa apreciar verdaderos valores.
