Atalanta Fugiens ha sido considerado el libro de emblemas más bello y sugerente de todos los tiempos. Su autor, Michael Maier (1568-1622), fue un célebre alquimista y médico de la corte del emperador Rodolfo II de Praga. Entre 1614 y 1622, Maier concibió una serie de obras alquímicas ilustradas, entre las cuales La fuga de Atalanta es, sin duda, la más importante. Publicada por primera vez en Oppenheim, en 1617, se inscribe dentro del movimiento espiritual rosacruz que floreció durante las primeras décadas del siglo XVII en los principados alemanes al cual pertenecían tanto el editor del libro, Theodor de Bry, como el autor de sus grabados, Merian. Parte de la fascinación que ha despertado esta obra se debe a su triple naturaleza, en tanto que libro de emblemas visual, obra musical –con sus cincuenta partituras que acompañan a las imágenes– y volumen puramente textual, con sus epigramas y comentarios alquímicos. Por todo ello, Atalanta Fugiens puede considerarse como el primer libro «multimedia» de la historia cultural europea. La presente edición ha querido rendir tributo a estos tres aspectos: no sólo reproduce los grabados a partir de una edición original e incluye por primera vez en castellano el texto íntegro de Maier, sino que ofrece también una magnífica versión musical producida por Joscelyn Godwin, para poder escuchar sus fugas, mientras se contemplan sus grabados y se leen sus epigramas. Como dice en su prólogo el gran erudito y musicólogo inglés Joscelyn Godwin, con esta edición «se hace justicia a los tres componentes (…) de la obra de Maier. Lo que el lector haga con ello depende de él: pues no hay duda de que esta obra es una producción misteriosa, sugestiva y enigmática para la vista, el oído y la mente…»
